Vikram kumar

In case you haven't noticed, our team has been growing rapidly! I'm excited to introduce you to Vikram Kumar, our new CFO. Vikram took a break from the number crunching to answer a few of my questions.

Tell me about where you're from, and what brought you to San Francisco.

I grew up in the South Bay and went to university in the East Bay at UC Berkeley. I lived for a number of years in the Peninsula. I moved to San Francisco a few years ago, so I am certainly well traveled around the Bay Area!

What are your favorite things to do in your free time?

I am a life-long tennis player, and I like to play tennis whenever I can find a good match! However, I also really like to challenge myself with learning new things. I recently started playing squash (another racquet sport) and am addicted. It’s a fantastic workout. I probably play squash 3-4 times a week now.

What's the best vacation you've ever been on? Dream vacation?

Over the holidays last year, I went on a 2 week trip to Australia with my girlfriend, Betsy. That sounds like a long flight, but it was made much better because we scheduled a 24-hour layover in Hawaii. Once in Australia, we had a great blend of family time (Betsy’s sister lives there), beach time (stayed about 150 yards from Coogee beach), and fun activities (went white water rafting on the old Sydney Olympics closed-circuit water course, which allowed us to be semi-reckless).

My dream would be to attend all four tennis majors (Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and US Open) in one year.

Who are your favorite musicians?

I’m pretty old-school when it comes to music. I prefer classic rock (Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones etc.) to anything that comes out now. (I couldn't agree more!)

If you hit the jackpot with the lottery today, what are the first things you would do?

The most extravagant thing I’d consider would be to build a property that has 3 different tennis courts on it: grass court, clay court and a hard court. I told you, I really like tennis. (I noticed!)

Do you have siblings? Do they live nearby?

I have a younger brother who used to live in San Francisco but now lives in London.

I know you have a dog. Tell me a little about him.

A year and a half ago Betsy and I rescued a Maltipoo (Maltese-Poodle) named Toby. We got so lucky because he immediately bonded with us and prefers nothing more than being petted. When we walk him around our neighborhood, he immediately bring a smile to the faces of everyone we walk by. I’m sure it’s mostly Toby, but I think they can also tell how happy Toby makes us. (When can Toby come to work?! :)

What are your favorite San Francisco restaurants?

I enjoy a number of restaurants in and around my neighborhood: Absinthe Brasserie, Suppenkuche, Zuni Café, Burma Love, Orenchi Beyond and Brenda’s French Soul Food.

If you could have dinner with one person dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Probably Roger Federer. I love the way he plays tennis and the class he exhibits on and off the court.

What brought you to CoverHound?

Between auto, home and life insurance, personal insurance is a significant monthly expense for nearly everyone. I’m a big proponent of transparency, and I think the company’s mission to bring simple and transparent solutions to personal insurance is important.

From a business perspective, I’ve worked at a number of marketplace businesses. After talking with Keith, I felt like CoverHound was putting in place key infrastructure and partnerships that could really help grow the business. Insurance is an old and enormous market that has yet to really be changed by technology. The opportunity to do so seems big, and I am excited to try to unlock that opportunity with the CoverHound team!

Vikram, thanks for taking the time to let us get to know you better! You're a great addition to CoverHound!
