Meet Jason Gerbovaz, our Senior DevOps Engineer! Jason joined the team a few weeks ago, and I recently sat down with him to get know him better.
Tell me about where you grew up? How long have you lived in SF?
I grew up in a small desert town in Southern California called Palmdale. Some of the memories I have while growing up: Hearing sonic booms from secret (and non-secret) military aircraft flying nearby and spending a lot of time working on classic cars in the garage with my father.
I have lived in San Francisco for three years. Living here is great, since it's the first time I've experienced city life.
What are your hobbies, and what do you like to do on your time off?
I'd love to work on classic cars again, but I don't exactly have the space for it living in SF. However, I do have a '69 Firebird waiting for me to finish restoring when I buy a house. Otherwise, hiking -- especially around the coast -- and watching movies on my home theater are also fun. (Definitely jealous of that home theater!)
Favorite vacation you've been on?
My favorite vacation is the one I took to Paris. I rented an apartment in the 5th arrondissement for a week. One week is just not enough to experience all the history, art and culture that Paris has to offer. (Agreed!)
I'd love to take a tour of Europe. Maybe spend some additional time in Spain and England and visit distant relatives in Croatia.
Watching bad science fiction movies is definitely one of them. I just can't look away.
Favorite TV shows / Movies?
I haven't been hooked on many TV shows lately. The only recent show that I have really watched all the way through is Game of Thrones. As a former -- or as some would say, recovering -- World of Warcraft player, I really enjoy the genre. Movies? Inception stands out, as do all the Marvel comic movies. Any good sci-fi movies, from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Oblivion and the newest Star Trek movies. I'm not picky though. Give me a good movie, and I'll watch it.
On road trips, I like to listen to old-time radio shows from the early to mid-1900s. It's fascinating how similar the old radio shows are to popular TV shows of today.
Favorite type of music/ bands /musicians?
I enjoy a pretty wide range of music. I grew up listening to old Latin music and classic rock. I like classical music and alternative rock all the way to house and trance. I'm a bit new to jazz, but I am discovering that I like classic jazz.
If you could go to dinner with anyone past or present, who would it be and why?
I'd love to go to dinner with my great grandparents. I think it would be great to just get to know them and find out how they emigrated from another country and started a new life here in the US.
What's your favorite SF restaurant?
Cotogna and Absinthe stand out as some of my favorites. There are others I would like to try, but I'll need to budget for them :). (2 of my personal favorites as well!)
What brought you to CoverHound?
Great, experienced leaders, a cool team to work with, and a solid business model. It was a no-brainer.
Jason, we are so excited to have you on the team! It's clear that you'll be bringing a lot to the table at CoverHound!
