Why a San Francisco insurance-technology company is expanding to Charlotte

CoverHound Inc., a San Francisco-based insurance-technology company, will soon open an East Coast office in Charlotte.

Founded in 2011, CoverHound provides quotes and comparisons of different options for property and casualty insurance for consumers. Chief Executive Keith Moore is a former general manager and senior vice president at Charlotte-based LendingTree Inc. (NASDAQ: TREE). During his time there, he helped launch the commercial loan, credit card and reverse mortgage product offerings for LendingTree.

"We don't necessarily want to be the LendingTree of insurance," he says. "We think insurance is unique enough to where CoverHound just wants to be the technology platform to enable the distribution of insurance."

Moore says his connections to the area are what led him to expand CoverHound to Charlotte. Some company executives will likely relocate to the Queen City in the future, he says.

CoverHound has yet to settle on an office space here. Moore says he is eyeing the uptown and Ballantyne areas.
